The long-awaited Pelé Museum (Museu Pelé) has finally been opened in Santos, Brazil (the city he was born) celebrating the life and career of the Brazilian football great while his country hosted the World Cup.
Hundreds of dignitaries were on hand in the port city of Santos to toast the 73-year-old Pele at the official opening of the Pele Museum — a 4,000 square meter complex inside the city's old town that cost about $22 million and houses more than 2,500 items related to his career, including trophies, jerseys and images of him with world leaders and celebrities.
The complex has three units: Bloco Central (550 sq. meters), with the museum's entrance and an area for shops, a cafe, and restrooms; Bloco 1 (1,405 sq. meters), with an area for temporary exhibitions and a spherical auditorium seating 80, as well as the administrative department on the third floor; Bloco 2 (1,232 sq. meters): Pelé's collection, displayed in glass cubes.
"In 1958 (Brazil's first World Cup victory) no one knew Brazil and today everyone's here at the inauguration of my museum," he said at the podium. "When I played in the 1958 Cup nobody knew Brazil, now we're getting the Cup of all Cups and all eyes are on us here."
To this day, he remains a national hero. He is also a successful businessman and a United Nations goodwill ambassador.
he collection will include 2,400 items from the soccer star's personal collection, including the objects of sentimental value such as the shoe shine box he used as a working kid as well as the legendary jersey number 10, cleats, balls, trophies, and other soccer memorabilia.
