Toyota recalls 6.4 million vehicles worldwide

Toyota announced a massive set of recalls Wednesday to address a series of problems, including a faulty cable that could prevent air bags from deploying and a defect that could prevent car seats from remaining in place during an accident.

Toyota has commenced a recall of 6.4 million vehicles around the world, for problems ranging from engine starter glitches to potentially dangerous problems like seat rail springs.

This recall covers faults in 27 different types of vehicle. Toyota US says it’s recalling approximately 472,500 Yaris Hatchbacks, Yaris Sedans and Scion xDs, and approximately 1.3 million Corolla, Matrix, Highlander, Tacoma, RAV4 and Yaris vehicles. In the UK, Toyota says the issues affect some RAV4, Hilux, Yaris and Urban Cruiser models.

One issue relates to a spiral cable assembly. When the car’s steering wheel is turned, this could cause, “damage to certain circuits that provide connectivity to the airbag”, Toyota explains. Another issue involves a seat rail spring that — if broken — could increase risk in the event of a crash.
