Nigeria is Africa’s largest mobile market with more than 125 million subscribers and a market penetration of around 75% in early 2014.
Asian smartphone brand, OPSSON, was recently launched into the Nigerian market, thereby increasing the number of smartphones in the country.
In a statement by the company, the firm noted that it was aware of the many smartphone brands in the country, adding that it was offering professional smartphones to create more choices.
While demands for smartphone by customers in Nigeria has continued to grow rapidly, global brand players such as Samsung, Apple, Sony, Nokia, Blackberry, TECNO and even Lenovo, have all unleashed different models of their devices targeted at virtually all market segment. The use of aggressive marketing strategy to drive sales has also made the scramble for the market a tight one.
Having registered presence in more than 50 countries, covering Africa, Middle East, South and South-East Asia, Europe, North and South America, the brand is expected to also penetrate the Nigerian market.
Some market observers who spoke with BrandArena said the OPSSON debut in the smartphone market will further boost competition in innovation, prices and also create more jobs for Nigerian youth.
"Our population is about 150 million and most Nigerians access the internet through mobile phone that's why the smartphone market have been growing rapidly. There is a market to be tapped in so there is no better time for OPSSON to key into the Nigerian market than now", said an ICT guru, Dr. Hassan Aina.
Speaking in the same vein, a mobile phone retailer at computer village in Lagos, Mr. Chibuzor David said: "No doubt, Samsung, Nokia and Blackberry seems to have been around for quite a long time but with the market penetration of TECNO recently, I'm sure more smartphones that have something unique to offer can still gain a huge market share.
"Some Nigerians love to change their phones often which I think its good for brand-owners that want to key into the market", he said.
Mrs. Salako Anjorin, a marketer in Lagos also submitted: "Only 25 per cent of Nigeria’s over 105 million mobile telephone subscribers use smartphones, according to global market research firm, TNS, in their 2013 report entitled, ‘Navigating growth in Africa. I'm sure the statistics most have improved much more but lot of opportunities are still their to be tapped into".
However, whether OPSSON's smartphone would make it a major player in the market or not remain a question that only time could tell.
