Nissan signs UEFA Champions League sponsorship deal

Nissan, the Japanese car maker, has signed up as the latest sponsor of the UEFA Champions League, in a four-year deal.

Nissan replaces Ford, the brand that had held the top sponsorship role for 21 years.

The value of the four-year deal has not been revealed, but current sponsor packages are reported to be worth more than £45m($74.6m; 54.5m euros) a season.

Nissan will become an official worldwide partner of UEFA from the 2014-15 season through to the 2017-18 season.

Current sponsor packages are thought to be worth more than £45m, the BBC reports.

Nissan will receive extensive rights and branding opportunities around Champions League matches.

"Europe's most prestigious football competition will be an important global platform for Nissan, and our aim is to show fans all over the world the excitement of both football and our cars," said Roel de Vries, its global head of marketing.
