Football fans across the nation have been filled with excitement ever since Heineken, the World’s leading international premium lager beer, announced that it will be bringing the prestigious UEFA Champions League Trophy to Nigeria.
The Trophy which will be in Nigeria from March 13 – 16, 2014 -will give Nigerian football fans the opportunity to feel and experience the UEFA Champions League Trophy Live. Heineken is also bringing Ruud Gullit to Nigeria with the Trophy. He is a winner of the UEFA European Championship and Super Cup and coach as well as ballon d’Or winner.
Expressing his excitement, Dele Lawal, a die-hard Lagos based Chelsea fan stated “It would be a dream come true to actually see the UEFA Trophy. Not many people have had that opportunity. To touch the trophy that the eventual UEFA League Champions will lift would be a great experience for any football lover. The only thing better than touching the trophy would be Chelsea being the Champions who get to lift it this year.”
Ohis Ehije, a Banker and avid fan of Barcelona said he is “so happy Heineken chose to bring the UEFA Trophy to Nigeria out of all the countries in Africa. It would be great to see the Trophy live even as I pray that Barcelona ends up this season’s UEFA champions.”
Other fans like Kabiru Inuwa, a Manchester United fan from Kano; Kunle Olagunju, an Osogbo based Real Madrid fan; John Adakole, a Makurdi based Arsenal fan amongst other have also expressed excitement to see the trophy live in Nigeria. Those outside Lagos are already making travelling arrangements to come and see the trophy.
The UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour has been presented for eight consecutive years by Heineken International, a UEFA Champions League partner. This year, Heineken will give football fans in Nigeria, Argentina and Vietnam the chance to see and get up close to the prestigious trophy. Like Heineken, the trophy is a true global icon. It represents the excellence of the UEFA Champions League worldwide and the ultimate achievement in European club football.
In a statement, Mr. Walter Drenth, Marketing Director Nigerian Breweries Plc, said “the Champions league trophy tour is an activity unique to Heineken. No other brand is capable of holding the trophy tour outside of Europe.”
He promised football fans that the brand - in consonance with its tagline of “Open Your World”- would provide an experience that only Heineken can deliver to its consumers.
In order to make the event memorable, various events and activities have been lined up by the brand to give consumers, trade partners as well as the media first hand contact with the trophy which is making its tour to Nigeria for the second time after it did so in 2009.
