A Zimbabwean writer, Noviolet Bulawayo, has emerged winner of the Etisalat Prize for Literature, Fiction,with her book “We Need New Names”.
The 32 year-old beat Bom Boy by Yewande Omotoso and Finding Soutbek by Karen Jennings to win the prize and a cash prize of £15,000 in addition to a trip to three African countries.
Etisalat Prize for Literature is the first ever pan-African prize celebrating African writers of published fiction.
The Chief Commercial Officer, Etisalat Nigeria, Mathew Willsher, said on Monday that “Etisalat Prize for Literature” was created to discover new talents in African literature and to honour their intellectual ability.
Willsher made the assertion at the prizes presentation to the winners of the maiden of the prize at the Federal Place Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Another category was Flash Fiction category for short stories which was won by a Nigerian, Uche Okonkwo, 31, with her novel “Neverland”. She went home with £1,000.
The prize aims to serve as a platform for the discovery of new creative talents in the continent and invariably,promote the burgeoning publishing industry in Africa.
