The new logo is more streamlined and simpler than the former. The logo had not been updated in 18 years.
"We wanted a logo that stayed true to our roots (whimsical, purple, with an exclamation point) yet embraced the evolution of our products," Yahoo chief marketing officer Kathy Savitt wrote in a Tumblr post.
I don't think there is much difference between the world logo and this.
