Lagos State Lauds Ribena-Tetra Pak Recycling Campaign With Schools

Lagos State Government has expressed support for the Ribena-Tetra Pak “Drink it, Flatten it and Bin it” Recycling campaign that is on-going with twenty schools in Lagos State. This was made known at the Art and Craft Exhibition of items like shopping bags, bird house, slippers, etc., made from Ribena empty packs by pupils of Vicsum School.

Ms. Adetokunbo Agbesanwa, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on School Advocacy, commended Ribena and its partner, Tetra Pak on the initiative. She said, "it is a laudable initiative from Ribena and we believe the children will learn from it. We all know how these wastes pollute the environment and we are glad that Ribena has come to save the situation. But we are not just saying they should drink, flatten and bin it; we are also saying they should reduce the amount of waste.”
Ms. Adeola Fadipe of Ribena; Ms. Gbemisola Adefuye, the Director of The Vicsum Schools; and Ms. Adetokunbo Agbesanwa, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on School Advocacy during the presentation of Educational Voucher for books by Ribena to the School.
The “Drink it, Flatten it and Bin it” campaign, which is a recycling project that is jointly sponsored by Ribena, a premium Vitamin C enriched drink from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Tetra Pak, a global food processing and packaging company, requires the pupils of each designated school to flatten and bin the empty Ribena pack as they consume the product. The sponsors of the campaign believe that this is a simple way of teaching the children the values of protecting the environment.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on School Advocacy, highlighted the perennial environmental problems that Lagos State and indeed other states of the Federation face as something that can be tackled from the root by teaching children to play their part. In her words, it is a way of “catching them young”. While commending the children for coming up with creative artworks using Ribena packs, she added, “We want the end products to be recycled and we also want the children to be involved in the recycling. So we want 'reduce and reuse' to be added to the campaign.

“Since it's (Ribena pack) a paper product, when you recycle it you are reducing the amount of materials used in producing new paper and you are also reducing the amount of paper you will need in producing the end product". In essence, a lot of trees and money are saved by simply recycling empty Ribena packs and other paper based materials. Ms. Adetokunbo Agbesanwa urged other corporate organisations to join in the fight to protect and preserve the environment.
